Wood Over a Concrete Slab, Glued or Floated

Hardwood Floors Ash Oxnard walks a slab job in the order it happens, from reading the moisture result to choosing glue or float and dealing with the extra height at doors, because on a slab the method matters as much as the board.

Three routes

Route How Added market cost Feel
Glue-down Plank glued with the maker's adhesive +$2–$4 per sq ft Firm and quiet
Floating Planks clicked or glued to each other over underlayment +$1–$2 per sq ft Softer, can sound hollow
Plywood layer Subfloor built on the slab, then nailed Varies Springy, adds height

Moisture decides

Before any route is picked, a slab test reads how much water is moving up. The flooring maker's written limit decides what passes. A reading above the limit means a rated primer, a floating system over a retarder, or a different material.

Height, doors and the kitchen

Primer, adhesive and underlayment all add thickness. A 1/2 in. rise can rub a door, catch a threshold or leave a dishwasher short. Ask who trims doors and who pulls and resets appliances, and what each adds.

Slab in a sandy, humid city

On any slab, fine sand carried in on shoes works like sandpaper under a floating floor, so entry mats are part of the plan. A glued floor tolerates that grit better than a loose one.

Questions to put in writing

  • Which moisture test, how many points and what readings?
  • Which route, and why for this room?
  • Who handles thresholds, doors and appliances?
  • What happens if the reading comes back high?
